The largest international student conference in the Baltic Region to be hosted by RSU
On 16 and 17 March Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) will host the largest student conference in the Baltic region - Health and Social Science. The student conference is organised by RSU and this is the fourth year that the conference has taken on an international dimension. This year’s conference will bring together over 270 participants from Latvia and abroad, 83 competent and professional jury members headed by the Head of the Department of Internal Diseases Prof. Aivars Lejnieks and over 1000 listeners.
The international student conference is organised by the RSU Student Union and is aimed at fostering research, sharing experience and networking. This is the first time that the conference will be a two-day event and its principal assignment will be to combine healthcare and social sciences, therefore one of the topics of the plenary session to be presented by the chair of the Association of Latvian Young Scientists Ieva Siliņa will be communication science.
"The number of students taking part in the largest scientific conferences in Europe is growing each year. This is a strong stimulus for constant development and to set new goals so that our conference would not only keep up with other conferences but even outpace them in certain aspects”, the organiser of the conference, RSU student Sandra Cipkina emphasises the importance of keeping the conference up-to-date.
RSU Rector professor Aigars Pētersons recognises the relevance of the international student conference noting that, "Increasing the interest of students in research to facilitate the overall development of science at the university level and nationwide is among RSU development priorities. We are pleased that our students’ interest in science is increasing and the increasing international representation at our student conference is clear confirmation of that. There are very serious studies presented at the conference that frequently turn into significant scientific discoveries. The RSU international student conference is eagerly awaited not only by our students but also by RSU staff.”
The same as every other year, the Student Conference will bring together healthcare and social sciences students from a number of countries – Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Ukraine, Germany, United Kingdom, Belgium, Netherlands and other.
During the conference, healthcare students will have the chance to attend the guest lecture by the President of the Emergency Medicine Section at the Royal Society of Medicine Zul Mirza on the diagnosis of acute diseases and treatment of thoracic trauma. Participants interested in social sciences are welcome to attend the lecture on critical thinking by Mārtiņš Daugulis and the lecture by Eugene Eteris on the future of Latvia from the political and economic perspective. The conference programme also lists numerous tours to popular local businesses (Grindex, Central Laboratory, New Black, Overpriced).
During the conference the students will have the opportunity to participate in 11 healthcare and 2 social sciences panels. The participants will present their papers to the audience and the jury, take part in discussions with field-recognised professors and there will be various master classes held by RSU scientific societies.
