Dear students of Rīga Stradiņš University,
For a year now, the fight against COVID-19 has been taking place around the world. The global pandemic has had a significant impact on our lives. For two semesters, the study process as well as research at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) have taken place remotely. Medical and health studies cannot be carried out without practical training in healthcare facilities.
One of the scientists who has been included in the Latvian Science Calendar 2021 is Arvīds Irmejs, an Associate Professor at the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Department of Surgery and a lead researcher at the Institute of Oncology. Irmejs is also an oncologist and breast surgeon at Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital. For 20 years, he and a large team of researchers from RSU have been researching genetically hereditary breast cancer and its prevalence in Latvia, and have made significant discoveries.
Theresa Gsöllpointner is a 3rd-year Medical student at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) originally from Salzburg, Austria. She is currently the Head of Integration and Sports on the board of the RSU International Student Association (ISA), after serving as the Assistant of that position the previous year.
Every day this week, the staff of the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Health Centre have had their hands full with students or residents arriving every 15 minutes to get their vaccine against COVID-19. The pace is like on a battlefield: residents work in the reception, nurses administer vaccines, and Doctor Sandra Gintere, lecturer, general practitioner (GP) and Head of the RSU Health Centre, interviews each patient before their vaccination.
