Elections for the Position of Rector of Riga Stradiņš University Being Held Today
Today, on 23 November, the Rīga Stradiņš University’s (RSU) Constitutional Assembly will hold the elections for the position of Rector. This will be the first year that the elections are held according to the new procedures set out in the Law on Higher Education Institutions. The new law provides that the RSU Council organises the competition for the position of rector. This week, the Council unanimously decided to nominate the current Rector, Professor Aigars Pētersons, as the candidate for the next term.
In total, three candidates applied for the post of RSU Rector, including one from abroad took part in the open international competition that lasted several months. In the second round of the competition, the Council assessed two candidates in depth.
The rector is elected by the RSU Constitutional Assembly that consists of 130 representatives from the University, including academic and administrative staff, as well as students. To be elected, a candidate must obtain more than half of the votes of the members of the Constitutional Assembly. The meeting, which will start at 14:00, will also be open to university staff and students. To attend in person, participants are asked to register using their university staff or student card.
