Neuroscience, Sports, and Innovation – Meet Professor Romain Meeusen at RSU Research Week!
Prof. Romain Meeusen is an outstanding specialist in sports physiology and sports physiotherapy. He is a professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), where he served as Vice-Rector for International Relations and led the Human Physiology Research Group. His main research focus is on the impact of physical exercise on the brain, studying how neurotransmitters influence human performance, training, and rehabilitation.

The professor has published approximately 550 scientific articles, book chapters, and conference papers, as well as 21 books on sports physiotherapy. He has delivered presentations at more than 1,000 conferences worldwide, demonstrating his significant influence on the advancement of sports science.
Research and achievements
Prof. Meeusen’s research covers thermoregulation, neurogenesis, cognitive functions, and the impact of nutrition on brain health. He has served as President of the Belgian Kinesiology Society and the Belgian Federation of Sports Physiotherapy, as well as a board member of the European College of Sport Science and the American College of Sports Medicine.
The professor has received several prestigious awards, including the Belgian Francqui Chair Award (2009), the Honorary Fellowship of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (2017), and the Science Communication Award from the Royal Flemish Academy of Science and Arts (2019).
