Promoting an active lifestyle among children and youth in the spotlight at RSU during National Health Week
Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) participated in National Health Week for the second time, which took place between 27 May and 2 June this year. During the week particular attention was paid to promoting an active lifestyle among children and youth. Statistical data and research shows that the number of overweight children is increasing the fastest in Latvia compared to other European countries. Only one fifth of school-aged children get enough physical activity and primarily lead a sedentary lifestyle. Both graduates and students of the Health Sport and Health Sport Specialist study programmes conducted several classes and lectures and made a video to promote an active lifestyle among children.
Kristīne Kraukle, a graduate of the Health Sport Specialist study programme, conducted several fitness classes for pupils from the 6th and 7th grades at a partner school of RSU – Riga Secondary School No. 41. She demonstrated a series of exercises that she recommends families to perform daily. In addition, Kraukle visited an association for young mothers, Māmiņu klubs, where she spoke about what physical activities are appropriate for children at a pre-school age and conducted a practical class. See her advice in the video RSU expert: Exercising with your child.
Gudega Meļķe, a student of the Health Sport study programme at RSU and an alpinism and sport climbing trainer, delivered a lecture on alpinism, sport tourism, sport climbing and opportunities for getting involved in these activities.
National Health Week is an initiative that was held for the 8th year as part of the NowWeMove campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and encourage people to participate in various sports and physical activities. The event is organised by the Latvian Sport for Everyone Association in collaboration with the International Sport and Culture Association. Health Week events are simultaneously held in several European countries.
