RSU Collects Donations for Ukraine
A special initiative was held at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) on 6 May in support of the Ukrainian people. Staff and students could donate everyday household items and food to provide Ukrainians with assistance both in their homeland, where the bloody war waged by Russia continues, and in Latvia, where more than 20,000 Ukrainians have found a safe haven.
RSU students, lecturers, and employees donated second hand goods, as well as new blankets, pillows, bedding, and other items. Donations included much-needed hygiene products and food.
Before collecting the donations, a list of the most needed goods was circulated based on recommendations from the non-governmental organisation Tavi draugi (www.palidzibaukrainai.lv). This ensured that the donated items would include the things that Ukrainians need most urgently both in their homeland and here in Latvia.
In the coming days, Tavi draugi will organise a humanitarian aid shipment to Ukraine that will also contain the items donated by RSU.
The 9 May in Latvia is the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the War in Ukraine, and this drive was one of several forms of support that RSU can provide. The university appreciates the Latvian government’s strong stance towards the aggressor country, providing not only political but also practical support to Ukraine.
