For Students
Sports

On Thursday, 2 June, as the end of the academic year approaches, we continued a tradition that we started five years ago and held a ceremony to honour our best sports teams, athletes, and coaches.

In his introduction to the event, RSU Rector Professor Aigars Pētersons expressed his gratitude to those students who managed to be active during the academic year and who could successfully combine their studies with award-winning sports activities.

‘Despite the pandemic, students from all our faculties have proved that they are stronger than COVID-19. This is reflected in the success they have had in a very wide range of sports disciplines. I hope that this continues and that you reach new heights in both Latvian and international competitions.’

RSU Rector, Prof. Aigars Pētersons

RSU Vice-Rector for Administration and Development Toms Baumanis invited the participants to address their coursemates and other students and encourage them to take part in sports activities.

‘The greatest pleasure for me and my colleagues is the constant development and dynamism. We are not familiar with such concepts as routine or comfort zone. One challenge follows another. We are moving forward and we are grateful to our university for the support.’

Head of the RSU Sports Club Laura Ritova

Anna Niedra, student of the RSU Faculty of Medicine, gave a musical performance at the ceremony.

Prof. Pētersons and Ritova highlighted a wide range of athletes, both individual athletes and members of different sports teams: weightlifters and powerlifters, track and field athletes, swimmers, the teams and coaches of both beach and classical volleyball as well as 3x3 basketball and classical basketball.

The men’s volleyball team won prizes at the competition Latvijas Universiāde for the first time where they competed against other Latvian universities. Toms Mārtiņš Smilga, Chairman of the Board of the RSU Student Union, is on this team.

The greatest achievement in women’s basketball is getting second place in the Latvian championship finals against the TTT Riga team. Congratulations to the team and to coach Matīss Rožlaps!

In the summer, both the men’s and women’s 3x3 basketball teams will travel to Łódź, Poland, to represent RSU and to compete against Europe’s strongest universities in the international student competition EUSA Games 2022.
