On 24-25 March 2022, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) will host the 8th International Student Conference Health and Social Sciences (RSU ISC 2022). Around 300 students from 17 countries are expected to participate and present their scientific work. Registration for both active and passive participants is open until 24 March. The conference will be divided into 27 sessions, which will take place both online and in person.
Researchers from Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) have developed a new technology for obtaining non-living bacteria (paraprobiotics). These can be used as a raw material in the production of new functional foods or food supplements. There is still a lot of work to be done in order for RSU researchers’ innovations to successfully enter the market, create public benefit and profit from the discovery, and this is called commercialisation.
The European Space Agency invites students to apply for an eight-day long workshop on entrepreneurship in the space industry. The workshop will take place online from 9 to 18 March 2022 on weekdays between 13:00 and 18:30 (CEST). The deadline for applications is 10 January.

Even though there were hopes that 2021 might be different, this past year was also be marked by COVID-19, which raised the bar for Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) in key areas: higher education and healthcare research. While we spent 2020 adapting to pandemic life, this year we have been able to help others. Our researchers joined the national research programme to mitigate the effects of COVID-19, our staff dynamically adapted to working remotely, and our students and residents mobilised to work with patients affected by COVID-19.
There has long been a discussion in scientific circles about the importance of transcendent states of consciousness through spiritual practices – yoga, meditation, prayer, and others. Mystical experiences are considered to be some of the most intense transcendent states of consciousness. Researchers from Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) have also focused on researching this phenomenon. The results of the study were recently published in Psychology of Consciousness: Theory, Research, and Practice, published by the American Psychological Association (APA).
The research programme at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) that developed recommendations on clinical, biochemical and immunogenetic paradigms of COVID-19 infection, was awarded the Certificate of Appreciation of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (LAS) that recognised it as a significant study in 2021.
Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) has implemented an unprecedented project in Latvian medical education – between 6 and 17 December, two floors of the the Medical Education Technology Centre (METC) were transformed into a simulated hospital. This simulation had a department of internal diseases, a department of surgery, as well as treatment rooms, a nurse post, and wards with mannequins and actors playing patients.

The summit looked at the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on medical education, research, and innovation.
Although this year has passed in the shadow of COVID-19, life has continued in all areas and industries – writers have published new books, artists have written songs and created works of art, athletes have trained and participated in competitions, researchers have worked hard in laboratories conducting research and making significant discoveries.
