European Day of Languages is an annual event that is held on 26 September. It provides the opportunity to highlight the wide variety of languages in Europe, to promote cultural and language diversity and to encourage people of all age groups to learn foreign languages.
On Thursday 27 September, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) will hold guest lectures given by Associate Professor Dr. Edward Leigh Gibson of Roehampton University, (UK) and Professor Janina Petkevičienė (Kaunas, Lithuania), organised by the RSU Department of Sports and Nutrition at the Faculty of Public Health and Social Welfare.
On Wednesday 20 September, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and Azienda Sanitaria di Bolzano hospital in Bolzano, located in Northern Italy, signed a cooperation agreement on the establishment of a RSU branch that will operate as a RSU clinical training centre. This is the second clinical training centre abroad to be established by RSU. The first branch was opened almost two years ago in the academic Lukas Hospital (Lukaskrankenhaus) in the city of Neuss, Germany.
The annual RSU Freshmen’s Sports Day was held on 6 September, gathering over 250 students who competed in both team sports and individual disciplines. Among team sports disciplines, volleyball was the most popular among students – 18 teams took part in the volleyball tournament, six teams played basketball and eight teams – football.
This year the Latvian Universities Sports Federation (LUSF), in cooperation with the Latvian Sports Federations Council, Ministry of Education and Science, sports federations and Latvia’s institutions of higher education are organising Latvia’s 29th Universiade (Student Games)..
As results of the international Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) show, the quality of life of elderly people, and their health and welfare are closely related to socioeconomic circumstances in childhood. The study analyses the impact of population ageing on economics, employment, healthcare, social policy and other factors that determine the development of the country. From 5 to 7 September, researchers representing 28 European countries and Israel met in the Small Guild in Rīga.
From 3 to 7 September the 46th Congress of the International Society for the History of Medicine (ISHM) was held in Lisbon. Professor Juris Salaks and Assistant Professor Ieva Lībiete from the RSU Institute of the History of Medicine were among the delegates at the congress, whereas RSU rector Professor Aigars Pētersons was invited as an honorary guest.
On 15 September RSU put out a call to papers for the RSU International Research Conference 2019 to be held from 1 to 3 April.
As part of their clinical studies, RSU Faculty of Dentistry students are offered the opportunity to take part in championships organised by dental product manufacturers, where students are given the opportunity to improve their professional skills in tooth restoration, gain experience in clinical work with new materials and win valuable awards.
In the first week of September, the RSU International Department (ID) invited colleagues to an informal meeting with international students over a cup of coffee. RSU employees had an opportunity to get to know more about international students and their experience at the university and in Latvia in general.
